Weight Control As Acne Treatment?

Research Indicates An Association of Excess Weight and Acne

In the ongoing search and discovery of acne treatment horizons it seems that being overweight, particularly for teenage girls, may be cause for a higher risk of acne.

There is a lot of sense to the practice of leading a healthy and balanced lifestyle. We tend to feel more comfortable with ourselves and hopefully enjoy a greater overall sense of well being. Recent survey research seems to point to teenage girls who are overweight to obese as being significantly more likely to develop acne than their balanced normal-weight peers.

Does this mean exercising weight control as a form of acne treatment?

Well, better read on.

  •  Researchers have concluded that excess weight is associated with greater acne risk among teenage girls after weighing up a varied range of other possibly related factors including dietary habits.

  • The data survey defined overweight as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 and up, and obesity as having a BMI of 30 and up. Body mass index is a measure of body fat based on height and weight and is used to estimate your total amount of fat.

  • Overall, roughly 13 percent of all the girls were found to have acne. When looking solely at girls who were overweight or obese, however, the figure rose to almost 19 percent. In the case of the boys surveyed, 13 to 14 percent had acne regardless of their weight.

Still, this does not mean to be a definite conclusion that there is a direct cause-and-effect relation between excess weight and acne. Only that there is an association between excess weight and acne.

So while it is going too far to think that weight control can be used as acne treatment it probably wouldn’t hurt any of us to shed some of the extra pounds we tend to put on especially after the holiday season.
